French Elections: Far-Right National Rally Makes Gains

First Projections Show Leftists Winning Most Seats

Far Right Holds Large Lead, Voters Split in Three Blocs

In the first round of legislative elections, France's far-right National Rally (RN) made significant gains, according to initial projections. The party currently holds 88 seats in the National Assembly, but polls suggest it could emerge as the largest party after the second round of voting.

Meanwhile, leftist parties are projected to have won a majority of seats, but the results are far from clear-cut. The first projections indicate a three-way split in the electorate, with the traditional left-wing parties (Socialist Party and Communist Party) trailing behind the RN and a new centrist alliance led by Emmanuel Macron.

Marie-Caroline Le Pen, the sister of RN leader Marine Le Pen, lost her race for a seat in the legislature. This setback is a blow to the party's hopes of forming a majority government.

The second round of voting will be held on June 19th, and it is expected to be a closely contested race. The outcome of the election will have significant implications for the future of French politics.
